Although it is currently associated with north-eastern Brazil, Festa Junina is also celebrated in the whole country. The month of June is the moment to pay homage to three Catholic saints: São João (June 12th), São Pedro (June 24th) and Santo Antônio (June 29th).
Festa Junina celebrates rural life and features typical clothing, food, dance (particularly quadrilha, which is comparable to square dancing). The quadrilha consists of a couple formations dancing around a wedding whose bride and groom are the central attraction. Men usually dress up as ranch boys with large straw hats and suspenders and women wear pigtails, painted gap teeth, freckles and red-checker dresses.
During June in Serro, mainly weekends, Festa Junina is commemorated with bonfires, fireworks, and small food and drink stands which serve typical Brazilian dishes such as quentão, canjica and pé-de-moleque. The quadrilha is famous for its choreographies and joyfulness. Everyone is welcome to join it and have some fun.
